U.S. men's soccer team eliminated from the Olympics after loss to Morocco

  • Sports

The United States men's soccer team was eliminated from the Olympic tournament on Friday after a 4-0 defeat to Morocco in the quarterfinals.

Goals by Soufiane Rahimi, Ilias Akhomach, Achraf Hakimi, and Mehdi Maouhoub at Parc des Princes dashed U.S. hopes of securing a medal at the Paris Games.

With enthusiastic support in the French capital, Morocco will face the winner of the Japan vs. Spain match in the semifinals in Marseille on Monday.

The U.S. men's team, qualifying for the Olympic quarterfinals for the first time since Sydney 2000, was outplayed by a skilled Moroccan side that had previously defeated Argentina in the group stage.

Rahimi opened the scoring with a penalty in the 29th minute, followed by Akhomach, who extended the lead in the 63rd minute.

Hakimi added a third goal after a solo run in the 70th minute.

Substitute Maouhoub sealed the victory with a penalty in second-half stoppage time.
