As speculation mounts that Kamala Harris will choose Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro as her running mate, it’s noteworthy that the Commonwealth may get its first black Governor as a result.
Should Shapiro resign to dive into a national campaign, Pennsylvania’s constitution stipulates that the Lieutenant Governor will assume the Governors office. The Senate President Pro Tempore, Kim Ward a Republican from Westmoreland County in Western PA would become Lieutenant Governor.
Shapiro’s resignation would propel Austin Davis, currently the nations youngest Lieutenant Governor, to the role of Governor of the Commonwealth. Davis is from McKeesoort PA a hard scrabble former Steel town in Western PA.
The running mate conversation has been swirling around Shapiro, as media reports have him cancelling all events this weekend while the Harris Camp plans a big rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday.
Shapiro, who worked as an attorney for Stanley Ronan in Philadelphia and as Montgomery County Chairman, has deep ties to the Delaware Valley.
