Margate Business Association looking forward to shouts of ‘Go Birds’ during annual Ducky Derby

Steve Jasiecki/Rubber duckies make their way to the finish line.

MARGATE – The city’s business association is hoping to hear loud shouts of ‘Go Birds’ during its fourth

annual Ducky Derby event being held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25. That’s when a flock of little rubber duckies will make their way through a roped course set up across the bay toward the Margate Pier on Washington Ave.

Members of the MBA have been selling little yellow rubber ducks at special events and in area shops all summer long, and they are looking forward to awarding Visa gift card prizes to the top three finishers. First place will receive $1,000, second place $500 and third place $25. The event is being sponsored by Margate Gardens Wine and Spirits.

Scott’s Dock is the starting point for this floating quack-a-palooza. Participants purchase raffle tickets at $5 for one, $20 for 5 with a corresponding number on a weighted, rubber duck.  The ducks are released into the bay into a closed course and with a little help from the current, the bay breeze and dedicated volunteers in kayaks, the ducks cruise towards a funneled finish line. Duck owners have no interaction with the rubber ducks, but they can cheer ‘Go Birds’ and watch the race from the pier.

Activities will begin at 11 a.m. with the derby beginning at approximately 11:30 a.m.

Children can also try their luck at the Duck Chuck, Quack in the Hole, Fishin’ for Fowl and other great games for a chance to win some fun prizes. USA DJ will provide entertainment and will host a “Chicken Dance” competition with the best dancer winning a prize.

To participate in the fowl flotilla, adults 21 and older can purchase their raffle tickets at Thrilling Thursdays’ Movies on the Beach, Margate Farmers Market on Thursday mornings at Steve and Cookie’s By The Bay, or from Margate Gardens Wine and Spirits, 9710 Ventnor Ave. Ticket sales will end 8 p.m.  Thursday, Aug.22 will not be available on the day of the event.
