Center City District will turn several streets near Rittenhouse Square into car-free zones on most Sundays in September, creating almost seven blocks of walkable space with activities, dining and shopping.

The Open Streets: West Walnut initiative will run on Sept. 8, 15, 22 and 29, with 8th Street from Locust to Chestnut and Walnut Street from 15th to 19th closed to cars. It will not be held on Sept. 1.

Closures will go into effect at 8 a.m. Events will run each day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All streets will be back open by 6 p.m.; cross streets will remain open at select intersections during the event.

More information from CCD:

These pedestrian-only thoroughfares will act as an extension of public space, with Rittenhouse Square’s 18th and Walnut entrance being a direct link to the park. Streets will be used as walkways, allowing retailers to expand outside. Some plan to offer exclusive discounts, in-store entertainment or special incentives as part of Open Streets: West Walnut. Food and beverages will be sold exclusively at restaurants along the route, with many expanding their tables onto the sidewalk. Open containers of alcohol will not be permitted, and takeout food will be at the discretion of the restaurants.

CCD will provide ambient entertainment, including acoustic musicians, strolling performers, dance groups and more. A family-friendly zone will offer sidewalk chalk, games and activities for kids. There will be no supplemental vendors on the street; everyone is encouraged to support the businesses located on the closed streets and surrounding areas.

It is not the first-such initiative in the city. The Philly Free Streets program was born out of Pope Francis' 2015 visit and held several events before the pandemic. There are no current plans to revive that programaccording to Philly Voice.
