Kermit the Frog once sang that “It ain’t easy being green,” but that isn’t the case for many residents, businesses, or groups in Lower Gwynedd Township. The township’s Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) is seeking those exact entities to honor them with a Going Green Award.

Sandi L. Feight-Hicks, Recreation Director for Lower Gwynedd Township, said the award is an important tool to both keep environmental needs at the forefront of residents’ minds and recognize those making strides in that arena.

“The purpose of the Going Green Award is to recognize sustainability initiatives that improve or protect the environment and our natural resources,” said Feight-Hicks. “And [it serves] to raise awareness about important environmental issues.”

Lower Gwynedd Township’s EAC, however, cannot do this alone. The organization is seeking nominees from its local residents. Any Lower Gwynedd residents, businesses, community groups, or educational entities in the township are welcome to apply.

The EAC’s Going Green Awards are available in a multitude of different categories, including:

  • Energy
  • Water
  • Sustainable Land Practices
  • Waste Minimization
  • Community Outreach and Betterment

“Our proposed goal is to ‘Recognize Someone for Doing Right,’” said Feight-Hicks. “Our Environmental Advisory Council has worked to update their section on our website for homeowners, and it has a wealth of information from green tips, resources, and incentives.”

Those interested in more information can visit the EAC’s webpage here.

The EAC aims to meet its goals through educational workshops and programs, articles, and community events for Lower Gwynedd and its surrounding communities. It’s Going Green Award seeks those that have “taken positive steps to improve or protect the environment.”

If you or someone you know has taken such steps, review the following nomination requirements, which include:

  • The nominee must be a resident, business, group, organization, educational institution, non-profit or other entity residing or located in Lower Gwynedd Township. (Members of the EAC and employees of the Township are not eligible to participate.)
  • A nomination form must be filled out in its entirety.
  • Nominees must confirm a willingness to participate and be available for a 30-minute interview by the Going Green Award team.
  • For the 2024 Award, a nominee or representative must also be available for the Award Presentation.

To nominate your choice, find the EAC’s required form at https://bit.ly/2024GoingGreenAward. Following a review of requirements, the top three candidates for the Going Green Award will be presented to the full EAC for a final vote.

Award winners will be notified prior to the award presentation at the Board of Supervisors January 2025 meeting and announcement in the e- and printed EAC newsletter. A plaque will be presented to the winner, and the organization or person’s name will also be added to the plaque of winners displayed in the township building.

The Lower Gwynedd EAC reserves the right to present multiple awards addressing varying categories for deserving candidates. If you have any questions, all should be directed to the email at [email protected].
