The Light the World Giving Machines are returning to Philadelphia, bringing a unique and meaningful way to give back this holiday season. Located inside The Cube at Fashion District Philadelphia (9th and Market entrance), these innovative "reverse vending machines" allow visitors to donate much-needed items to benefit local and global communities. The Giving Machines are open now through Wednesday, December 4th, 2024, offering an impactful and festive experience for all ages.
How the Giving Machines Work
Unlike traditional vending machines, the Giving Machines allow users to “purchase” donation items to support six charitable organizations:
Each machine displays cards representing goods and services requested by these organizations. Items range in price from $5 to $100 and include essentials such as meals, clothing, bedding, classroom supplies, hygiene products, livestock, and medical supplies. Donors select the items they wish to give, and after payment, the card drops into a secure collection bin. 100% of the funds are directed to the designated charities, with operational costs covered by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the program sponsor.
Throughout the machines’ stay, a variety of festive activities are planned, including live music, family-themed nights, holiday storytime, and performances by local youth choirs. One highlight is Eagles Night this Friday, November 22nd, at 6:00 PM, featuring Philadelphia Eagles players Britain Covey, Tanner McKee, Laekin Vakalahi, and Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore. Guests can enjoy photo opportunities, mingle with the players, and celebrate the spirit of giving.
A Unique and Impactful Experience
Since their introduction in 2017, the Giving Machines have raised over $32 million, making a difference for individuals and communities around the globe. Items available for donation in Philadelphia include toys, internet access, hygiene kits, menstrual supplies, seeds, educational resources, and even goats, offering a range of options to fit every donor’s budget.
“The Giving Machines are both meaningful and fun,” said Ryan Williams, CMD, General Manager of Fashion District Philadelphia. “They provide an innovative and immersive way for visitors to give back to people in real need this time of year.”
Local representative Kate Sookhoo, Director of Communication for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, added, “The Giving Machines bless lives on both sides of the glass—the giver and the receiver. They offer a unique opportunity to support both local and global causes.”
