The Philadelphia City Council has allocated funding to Planned Parenthood for the first time.
The council will send $500,000 in city funds to the organization's Southeastern Pennsylvania chapter, according to Philly Voice. The money will boost abortion access and other services at four city locations. The funds represent about 4% of the organization's average local spending.
City Council has also allocated an additional $450,000 for other women's health concerns, according to the report -- $250,000 for "abortion liberation funding to help low-income women access health care" and $200,000 to organizations that make free feminine hygiene products available.
Planned Parenthood Southeastern Pennsylvania told Philly Voice that it provides services to 40,000 people annually in Delaware, Montgomery, Chester, and Philadelphia counties. About a quarter of those people receive abortion services. The organization serves 23,000 in Philly each year, with roughly the same percentage of abortion services provided.
