A Philadelphia police officer shot during a June traffic stop has died.
Police Officer Jaime Roman succumbed to his injuries Tuesday night, according to police commissioner Kevin Bethel. Roman, who served in the 25th District, was shot in the neck in late June and had been on life support.
"A grateful city mourns his loss," Mayor Cherelle Parker said on X. Bethel said Roman was surrounded by his family and had "bravely fought" since the shooting. He leaves behind a wife and two young children.
Suspect Ramon Rodriguez Vazquez, 36, was stopped by police around 7:15 p.m. on June 22. Cops moved to impound his vehicle when he had no license or registration. A gun holster was then spotted; Vasquez took off running and then turned around and fired on the officers before running off and changing his clothing. He then attempted to carjack a vehicle before briefly taking a man hostage at gunpoint and barricading himself in the man's home. Police were able to apprehend him without incident.
Vazquez will be charged with murder. His bail was set at $12.5 million.
