SEPTA commuters will no longer be able to buy physical tickets at certain Regional Rail stations.
The transit authority announced 10 locations will cease ticket sales on Sept. 20. The impacted stations: Elkins Park, Fort Washington, Hatboro, Langhorne, Lansdowne, Manayunk, Queen Lane, Secane, Swarthmore and Wyndmoor.
The move is part of SEPTA's effort to phase out physical tickets. Amenities, restrooms and seating will remain operational at most of the impacted locations. Less than 10% of riders pay cash fares.
The news comes amid reports SEPTA may hike fares on some passengers by the end of the year.
The transit authority's board may endcustomer discount programs and other adjustments to generate more revenue, according to The Inquirer. The measures will take effect Dec. 1 if approved.
SEPTA's cash fares will remain $2.50, but those who pay with Key passes, credit and debit cards and payment apps wouldno longer pay $2 with a 50-cent discount. Most single-trip fares on Regional Rail would also see an average $1 hike, although some fares would be cut. Prices for daily, weekly and monthly passes would stay the same.
SEPTA faces a $222 million operating deficit, according to KYW. The proposed changes would generate about $14 million in projected new revenues.
