The Upper Darby School Board has signed off on installing weapons detection systems at its high and middle schools.
The devices can scan as many as 2,000 students in an hour, according to ABC 6. They are not simply metal detectors to detect firearms; they also utilize artificial intelligence and identify objects that have the potential to be or resemble various weapons.
The district has already experienced two gun-related incidents this school year.
Thirteen systems in total will be installed at various locations inside Upper Darby High School and the district's two middle schools. The technology will be similar to what is utilized at hospitals, stadiums and other schools.
