If you plan to drive through Center City next week, be advised.
PennDOT announced roadway construction will occur at night along Interstate 95, causing closures. The work is part of the $329 million CAP project to replace the entire covered stretch of the interstate in Center City, and officials caution motorists should prepare for backups and delays.
The closure schedule is as follows:
Monday, Sept. 30: A single lane closure will begin at 9 p.m., followed by multiple lane closures from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Lanes will be closed in both directions between Exits 22 and 20.
Tuesday, Oct. 1: Double lane closures in both directions between Exits 22 and 20 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Wednesday, Oct. 2: Double lane closures in both directions between Exits 22 and 20 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Also: If weather causes work cancelations, the closure schedule could be extended to Thursday and Friday as well.
The CAP project "is replacing and extending the covered area over I-95 and Columbus Boulevard between Chestnut and Walnut streets," according to PennDOT.
"This project will improve pedestrian and multimodal connections between Center City and the waterfront. The new project has two main components: a new Park at Penn's Landing, and a new signature bridge at South Street, both of which will also extend over Columbus Boulevard to connect cyclists and pedestrians to the newly completed Delaware River Trail."
