Mega Millions® announces exciting overhaul

New and improved Mega Millions® to offer bigger jackpots, enhanced prizes, and improved chances for players

  • State

A new and enhanced version of Mega Millions® is set to debut to provide Pennsylvania Lottery players with more fun and excitement. The new version of the Mega Millions® game launched following the final drawing of the current game Friday night.

The first drawing under the new prize structure will be held at 11 p.m. on Tuesday. The updates to the popular multi-state Draw Game will offer players:

  • Bigger, faster-growing jackpots awarded more frequently
  • Larger starting jackpot
  • Improved chances of winning the jackpot
  • A built-in multiplier on every play, increasing every non-jackpot win
  • No breakeven prizes – when a player wins, they will always win more than the cost of a play

“All of us at the Pennsylvania Lottery have felt the excitement that our players feel when a Mega Millions® jackpot run offers the opportunity to win a life-changing prize. That excitement is going to grow exponentially with the changes that are debuting this week for Mega Millions®,” said Secretary of Revenue Pat Browne. “These important updates for the game will also make a real difference for the older Pennsylvanians who benefit from Lottery proceeds. We’re going to see more funding to help our seniors with things like free meals, a ride to their favorite senior center, or help with their prescription drug costs.”

“This new version of Mega Millions® will create more billionaires and even more millionaires as jackpots continue to rise,” said Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director Drew Svitko. “Since joining the game in 2010, the Pennsylvania Lottery has awarded three Mega Millions® jackpots, including a prize worth more than half a billion sold in May 2021. We’re looking forward to seeing more of those momentous prizes won right here in Pennsylvania.”

The revamped Mega Millions® will offer bigger prizes at every level, giving players even more reasons to play. For instance, matching the five white ball numbers will no longer result in a $1 million prize. Thanks to the new built-in multiplier, every winner will automatically receive a multiplier — ranging from 2X to 10X — that will multiply their prize up to $10 million.

Additionally, the new game guarantees that every winner will always take home more than the cost of their play. The minimum prize will now be twice the cost of a play, with the potential for even larger payouts. For example, matching just the Mega Ball® with a 2X multiplier will result in a $10 payout, but players could win up to $50 for this match depending on the multiplier randomly selected for this play.

Another change is the ticket price, which will increase from $2 to $5 per play. This marks only the second price adjustment since the game's launch in 2002, and the first since the current game matrix was introduced in 2017.

"With bigger jackpots, better chances, and enhanced prizes, there’s never been a better time to play. It only takes one ticket to win big,” added Svitko. “We are also reminding our players to please play responsibly.”

Mega Millions® is a national game with tickets sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are conducted at 11 p.m. Eastern time on Tuesdays and Fridays in Atlanta, Georgia. For more information on the changes, visit palottery.com.

Pennsylvania Lottery players have options to purchase their Mega Millions® tickets online or by visiting a retailer. Players can find lottery-selling locations closest to them by visiting the Find a Retailer section of the Lottery’s website.

About Us: The Pennsylvania Lottery remains the only state lottery to direct all proceeds to programs that benefit older residents. Since ticket sales began in 1972, it has contributed more than $36.2 billion to fund property tax and rent rebates, transportation, care services, prescription assistance, and local services including senior centers and meals.
