SEPTA has expanded contactless payment options to its Regional Rail lines in the region.

The launch, which took place last Friday, means that customers on all SEPTA modes — trains, buses, subways and trolleys — can now use tap-and-go payment methods.

“Deploying this technology systemwide is a major achievement,” said SEPTA Board Chair Kenneth Lawrence Jr. “With this expansion to Regional Rail, SEPTA is the first commuter rail network in the country to accept contactless payments.”

Regional Rail riders can now tap any credit or debit card, either physical or through mobile wallets like Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay, at turnstiles or platform validators. Riders must tap on and tap off, similar to the SEPTA Key Card system. Regional Rail contactless fares are the same as current Travel Wallet fares.

SEPTA launched contactless payment technology on its Transit lines in September 2023 and it has generated $31 million in revenue since then, transit officials said.

“This technology makes SEPTA more convenient for customers who may not want to plan their trips in advance, purchase a physical Key Card, or use cash to pay their fares – just tap and go,” said SEPTA Interim General Manager Scott Sauer. “Increasing efficiency will help us continue to rebuild our ridership and support the major events coming to Philadelphia in 2026.”

Customers using Apple Pay can also utilize Express Mode, allowing them to pay without unlocking their iPhone or Apple Watch.

Validators displaying credit card icons are ready to accept contactless payments. SEPTA advises customers to separate their cards, Key Card and phone to ensure the correct account is charged.

Contactless payments are not currently available for travel to or from New Jersey on SEPTA, though the transit authority is working to install validators at those stations.

The expansion comes as SEPTA seeks to increase revenue amid financial shortfalls.
