Andrew Painter's debut with Triple-A Lehigh Valley will have to wait at least another week.
After Rob Thomson initially said Tuesday that the No. 1 prospect's next rehab start would come with the IronPigs, it was clarified that the manager misspoke:
Andrew Painter’s next minor-league start is Thursday. He is remaining with Low-A Clearwater and will pitch four innings. Phillies could move him north in May to a higher-level affiliate.
According to @MattGelb, Andrew Painter’s next start will remain with Clearwater, not Lehigh Valley.https://t.co/W9zp9cM2Ku https://t.co/4mlRTrlZfE
Painter will make a fourth start with Single-A Clearwater, where he's struck out 10 batters and posted a 2.45 ERA over 7 1/3 innings. Painter will throw four innings and/or 60 pitches at Dunedin on Thursday.
Still, it leaves you to wonder if a promotion for Painter isn't far off. Lehigh Valley is on the road in Rochester this week, and that raised some eyebrows when Thomson said Painter would be starting with them this week. But the following week, they'll be home at Coca-Cola Park against the Worcester Red Sox.
In any event, Thomson said there's been no change to the timeline of Painter to arrive with the Phillies. All along, the 22-year-old's ETA has been approximately July, with the possibility of June or August.
