Defensive tackle Jordan Davis will remain an Eagle through at least the 2026 season.

The Birds exercised an option on Wednesday to retain Davis, currently entering the fourth year of his rookie deal, for a fifth year at a predetermined price of about $13 million (fully guaranteed). After any first-round draft pick finishes their third year in the league, their club can exercise a fifth-year option at an amount based on a set formula.

The $13 mil figure for Davis is based on the average of the third through 25th salaries at his position over the last five years. The formula ranges higher for players who are on the field for a certain percentage of snap counts and/or make Pro Bowl appearances, criteria that aren't applicable in Davis' case.

Davis, 25, helped lead Georgia to a national championship in 2021. The Eagles drafted him 13th overall in 2022. While his NFL statistics don't jump off the page, the defensive tackle has been solid, especially against the run. Davis also registered sacks in last year's NFC Championship Game and in Super Bowl LIX.

The big knock on Davis has been his limited snap counts, accompanied by questions about his conditioning. The Philadelphia Inquirer's Jeff McLane reported earlier this week that the Eagles' decision on the fifth-year option could hinge on Davis' approach to offseason training.

Exercising Davis' fifth-year option is a bit of a gamble by the Birds. It's probably an overpay for Davis' current level of production, but could prove to be a bargain if the DT lives up to his massive potential.
