The countdown—only 309 days—has begun for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with 16 host cities, including Philadelphia, preparing for an influx of millions nationwide. FIFA recently released its volunteer program, expecting around 65,000 dedicated fans to register.

There’s no shortage of need, as Philadelphia alone will require 3,000 FIFA volunteers for their venues. These volunteers will work in every area from media operations to hospitality, providing support in stadiums, airports, fan zones, and other related locations.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime and generational opportunity,” Senior Director of Operations and Strategic Partnerships for Philadelphia Soccer 2026, Alison Grove, explained. “Not only is it the biggest sporting event in the world, but in 2026, it will be the biggest World Cup ever… It will be history-making.”

Philadelphia Soccer 2026, the non-profit in charge of planning the FIFA World Cup and coordinating with the city, recently announced that Philly’s volunteer center location will be at 901 Market Street, adjacent to the Convention Center.

The center will serve as a recruitment location, where an anticipated 7 thousand applicants will be interviewed. It will also become a community space, allowing volunteers to connect while learning more about their roles and Philadelphia Soccer 2026’s mission.

In a press release on Tuesday, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker said the center’s placement in the Fashion District, a hub of Philadelphia businesses, represents a “significant victory” for the city.

“The center will not only help power critical volunteer efforts supporting FIFA World Cup 26™ but also generate significant economic activity for our local businesses, restaurants, and hotels,” Parker said. “We are proud to support this effort and the thousands of volunteers who will ensure that next summer’s tournament is a success.”

The site is also easily accessible, Michelle Singer, a Board Co-Chair for Philadelphia Soccer 2026, pointed out. With 3,100 parking spaces available, volunteers will be able to drive to the center, in addition to walking or taking public transport.

With potential cuts to SEPTA’s regional rail lines at the end of the month, concerns have arisen about the effectiveness of public transportation.

“We have a transportation consultant on board that is working closely with us,” Grove explained. “We are preparing for all scenarios.”

“...It is located just blocks away from the country's most historical sites and the city's economic center," Singer said. "There really is no better site to base our large volunteer effort, and I am glad we were able to secure it."

Those interested can register online at FIFA’s website if they meet the requirements: are at least 18 years old, have U.S. citizenship, and speak English—though other languages are a plus. The program also provides a timeline of the application process, including interviews and role offers.

This is not only an incredible opportunity and experience, but it is a commitment as well. Volunteers must be able to commit to nine shifts between June 11, 2026, and July 19, 2026.

“[Philadelphia] will look alive and electric,” said Grove. “It will be thriving.”
