Drivers should expect significant delays on the Schuylkill Expressway next weekend as PennDOT begins milling and paving work in the University City section of Philadelphia.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that a lane will be closed in both directions of I-76 between Friday night, Aug. 22, and early Monday morning, Aug. 25.
On the eastbound side, a left lane and shoulder will be closed from Walnut Street to the Grays Ferry/University Avenue exit (Exit 346B) from 8 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday. On the westbound side, a left lane will be closed from the Schuylkill River to Walnut Street between 11 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Saturday.
The South Street ramps to and from eastbound I-76 will also be closed and detoured during the eastbound lane closure. Drivers should follow posted detour routes to access South Street or eastbound I-76.
Meanwhile, in Old City, Market Street between Front Street and 6th Street remains partially closed for sidewalk and roadway construction, with westbound traffic detoured to Arch Street. The ongoing project, announced Aug. 1, is expected to last up to three months.
PennDOT warns that backups are likely near the work zones and advises motorists to use I-676 and I-95, or I-476 and I-95, as alternate routes. Traffic conditions can be monitored through 511PA.
