Kyle Schwarber homered four times and set a new franchise single-game RBI record as the Phillies clobbered the Atlanta Braves 19-4 Thursday evening at Citizens Bank Park to open up a four-game weekend set.

Schwarber entered the game on an 0-for-20 stretch. He exited it with four more home runs, putting him in sole possession of second place on the single-season franchise home run leaderboard with 49

Schwarber is one home run away from becoming the second Phillie to hit 50 home runs in a season. He's now nine shy of Ryan Howard's single-season franchise record of 58, which he hit when he won NL MVP in 2006.

With his performance, Schwarber became the fourth player in franchise history to hit four home runs in a game, joining three franchise icons that are all in the Hall of Fame. Ed Delahanty was the first to do it on July 13, 1896 against the Chicago Colts (although two were inside-the-park). Chuck Klein homered four times on July 10, 1936 at Pittsburgh vs. the Pirates. Mike Schmidt did it on April 17, 1976 at Wrigley Field against the Cubs.

Schwarber also set a new single-game franchise record with nine RBIs. Gavy Cravath (Aug. 8, 1915), Willie "Puddin' Head" Jones (Aug. 20, 1958), Schmidt (April 17, 1976) and Jayson Werth (May 16, 2008) were previously tied for the the team record with eight RBIs.

The first of Schwarber's four home runs was a second-deck blast in the bottom of the first inning, which helped the Phillies to dig themselves out of an early 3-0 hole. But after Aaron Nola allowed three runs and threw 37 pitches in the first inning, the veteran righty settled in to give the Phillies six innings. Granted, six innings and four earned runs isn't exactly inspiring for someone competing to be the No. 2 starter in the postseason rotation. But given how the first inning played out, it was a pretty impressive rebound for Nola.

Additionally, Nola made history with four strikeouts Thursday, passing Cole Hamels for third place on the franchise's all-time strikeout list. Nola, who debuted in 2015, now has 1,845 strikeouts in parts of 11 seasons. The only pitchers ahead of him in team history are Hall of Famers Steve Carlton (3,031) and Robin Roberts (1,871).

While Nola was able to settle in after a rough first inning, Atlanta starter Cal Quantrill wasn't. He gave up nine hits, four home runs and nine earned runs over just 3 1/3 innings. Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto and Bryce Harper all hit second-deck home runs off Quantrill. Max Kepler had to settle for a more modest 399 feet on his home run:

Ultimately, though, Schwarber was the story. The Phillies snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 77-57 Thursday. But you can go an entire lifetime and not be at the park when someone hits four home runs. The 41,293 fans in attendance at Citizens Bank Park this evening witnessed the defining performance in one of the greatest single seasons in club history.
