Six homes on the 7200 block of Calvert Street caught fire in the aftermath of a medical transport plane crash in a Northeast Philadelphia neighborhood Friday night, fire officials said.
Mike Bresnan, president of the International Brotherhood of Fire Fighters Local 22 told the Philadelphia Inquirer that first responders were able to evacuate the homes quickly and that there were no casualties inside those homes.
"The city is lucky where (the plane) hit," Bresnan said. "If it would have hit in the middle of the block of rowhouses, we could have lost a whole block or more. When you get jet fuel, that stuff is hard to put out."
The plane reportedly hit the street and the fire from the fuel spread immediately to a couple nearby homes before jumping from home to home and spreading quickly.
In addition, fire fighters had to battle at least a half dozen car fires in the street near the crash site.
There has been no official word from officials on the number of injuries or casualties from those vehicles or other people on the ground at the time of the crash.
Six individuals were treated at Temple University Hospital. Three were discharged Friday night and another three remained in fair condition. Others in need of treatment were diverted to other hospitals in the area.
