A SEPTA train burst into flames Thursday evening in Delaware County, prompting a swift evacuation of passengers.
The incident occurred around 6 p.m. near the Crum Lynne Station in Ridley Park. The six-car train, carrying approximately 350 passengers from Philadelphia to Wilmington, was engulfed in smoke and flames, as seen in images shared with Action News.
According to SEPTA spokesperson Andrew Busch, the fire was first detected as passengers were being evacuated.
"Very quick action by our crews helped ensure a safe outcome," Busch said. "We don't yet know where the fire started—only that it originated beneath the train before rapidly spreading."
Passengers reported seeing smoke just minutes after departing from Philadelphia.
Service to Wilmington has been suspended, and Amtrak service along the Northeast Corridor is also affected.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
