A 20-year-old Temple student was shot and killed in North Philadelphia late Thursday night after an attempted drug deal took turn for the worse.
The incident occurred at approximately 11p.m. on the 1500 block of N. Carlisle St. near the university's off-campus housing.
Chief inspector Scott Small told reporters that a suspected shooter, 23, who is also a Temple student, was taken to police headquarters to be interviewed. A third person, who was with the victim, was also taken to be interviewed as a witness.
According to police, two guns and a bag of marijuana were recovered from the scene. It is believed that at least one of the guns belonged to the shooter. Police believe the shooting occurred after an altercation between the two men.
Police found the victim laying between two parked cars with a gunshot wound to the chest. Police drove him to Temple University hospital where he died a short time later.
Surveillance cameras in the area will be used to try to piece together what led to the escalation of the altercation between the two students.
"It is with profound sadness that I inform you of a loss within our Temple community," University president John Fry said in a statement released by the school. "I am heartbroken by the senseless loss of such a young life. This tragedy is difficult to comprehend, and my thoughts and prayers are with all who are grieving."
Temple wanted to remind students that support services are available through the Tuttleman Counseling Services.
