Emergency crews still are actively tending to the massive warehouse fire that broke out Tuesday night at STS Technologies, 301 Highland Avenue in Jenkintown.
At a morning press conference nearly 10 hours after the fire broke out, Abington Township Police Chief Patrick Molloy said the fire is still active.
“It’s still smoldering,” Molloy said. “We are still fighting it and trying to keep it contained. It is contained to the center of the building.”
Hazmat teams still are monitoring the air and border within the 1-mile zone.
“We have not detected any threats to the public – all the tests have been coming out negative,” Molloy said. “Monitoring will continue in the coming days.”
Molloy confirmed that no injuries occurred to the 60 employees that were inside the building and all were evacuated. Molloy also confirmed that no injuries were reported to responding personnel, although there is a possibility that some of them could have been exposed to hazardous materials/chemicals. Molloy did confirm that no personnel had to be treated at this time.
Molloy confirmed that a Shelter in Place order has been issued for a 1-mile radius of the site.
More than 68 fire departments and emergency services reported to the scene. By 1:30 a.m., it reached a four-alarm fire.
“I could not be more proud of our paid firefighters and volunteers,” Molloy said. “We can never take them for granted. We are very appreciative of them.”
Officials still are trying to determine the cause of the fire.
