A 23-year-old police officer is fighting for his life after being stabbed while conducting a business check on Sunday afternoon.
Police are saying the officer, Joshua McKnight, was doing a routine check when he was ambushed from behind by his assailant and stabbed outside of the Duran Grocery Store, located at Broadway and Chestnut street in Camden.
"While out of his vehicle for 58 seconds, speaking to an individual outside of the store, a second, unknown male approached him from behind and brutally stabbed him in the neck," Camden police chief Gabriel Rodriguez told 6ABC.
The officer was rushed to Cooper University Hospital where he remains in critical, but stable condition.
Police say they took a man into custody minutes after the attack and have charged Richard Dennis, 38, with attempted murder, aggravated assault on a law enforcement offer and other related offenses.
According to Fox29 McKnight is a former marine who has served on the Camden police force for the past two years.
