Yesterday it was Macy's, today it is Kohl's.
A day after one department store chair announced it was closing 65 locations nationwide, a second popular department store did the same, only on a smaller scale.
Kohl's announced on Friday it would be shuttering 27 stores, including two in the Philadelphia region, by the end of the first quarter of 2025 in April.
The two stores being closed in the area are located on W. Schuylkill Rd. in Pottstown and on Princeton Hightstown Rd. in East Windsor Twp., N.J.
First Macy's now Kohl's. All the stores mom and I used to frequent on Saturday afternoons.
It's no secret that the reliance on Amazon and other online shopping destinations have severely cut into the need for brick and mortar department stores of substantial size. As time passes, more and more department stores are going to go the way of the Dodo bird, and become extinct.
Kohl's is just the latest to tighten it's belt at the corporate level.
"As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams," Tom Kingsbury, CEO of Kohl's said in a statement issued by the company.
