Dr. Tony B. Watlington, Sr., Superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia—the nation’s eighth-largest school district—has been honored as Superintendent of the Year by the District Administration Leadership Institute (DALI). This recognition, part of DALI’s 2025 National Awards Program, celebrates excellence and innovation in education, spotlighting leaders, districts, and initiatives that are shaping the future of schools across America.
Dr. Watlington’s tenure has driven significant progress in the School District of Philadelphia. Over the past two and a half years, student attendance and test scores have increased, the graduation rate has improved, and the district has seen a reduction of over 1,400 student dropouts. In the 2023-2024 school year, district enrollment rose for the first time in a decade, with academic performance improving in 9 of 13 key areas.
Building on this momentum, Dr. Watlington’s initiatives for the 2024-2025 school year include a reorganization of learning networks to accelerate achievement, the launch of the “Let’s Talk” communication platform to enhance customer service, and the opening of the district’s first Special Education Evaluation Center to better support students with diverse needs.
“This recognition belongs to our entire school community,” said Dr. Watlington. “The progress we've made is thanks to the dedication of our Board of Education, staff, parents, students, and unions. Together, we are shaping a brighter future.”
DALI, a leading national organization supporting pre-K-12 district leaders, praised Dr. Watlington’s leadership. Amy Dujon, DALI’s Vice President of Education, highlighted his integrity, vision, and impact, describing his work as a "beacon of excellence" for educators nationwide.
Dr. Watlington accepted the prestigious award during the DALI Superintendents Summit in Florida, further solidifying his reputation as a transformative leader in education.
