Playoff football in the snow. It's something we've seen on television in places like Buffalo and Green Bay, but never here in Philly.
It looks like that's about to change this weekend.
While predictive models are still a little all over the place as far as accumulation, where every model - and every meteorologist worth their salt in this town - agree, is that there will be snow Sunday afternoon, just in time for the Eagles-Rams tilt at Lincoln Financial Field.
A cold front is expected to move across the region Saturday night into Sunday, dropping temperatures below freezing and setting the stage for a snow event.
According to multiple meteorologists as well as the National Weather Service, snow is expected to arrive in the region around Noon on Sunday and in Philadelphia proper around 3PM - just in time for kickoff - and continue through the afternoon and into the evening hours.
SUNDAY SCENARIO & BEYOND
Watching a coastal storm for Sunday. The model agreement has been terrible, but I am very confident we will see some accumulating snow, just need to fine tune how much. Then dangerous cold follows with wind chills below zero at night/zero during day. pic.twitter.com/SqYytmYxTu
The snow is expected to last until about midnight.
The models are still not in agreement on the amount of snow we will see, but forecasters are expecting accumulation.
Currently, the European model is predicting 2-3 inches. However the GFS model is currently predicting six inches in Philadelphia.
⚠️❄️🥶 We have begun issuing briefing packages for the potential wintry precip this weekend as well as the dangerously cold conditions expected much of next week. #PAwx #NJwx #DEwx #MDwxhttps://t.co/JiD09ByGTv pic.twitter.com/vA4z0n0Iv0
The National Weather Service's initial prediction on Friday for Philadelphia is 3-4 inches.
All told, it ought to make for quite the experience at the Linc on Sunday afternoon, and quite the headache getting out of the parking lots and home safely after the game ends.
Starting Monday, temperatures will dip even further and we will be in for a deep freeze with temperatures expected to stay below freezing through Thursday, with highs in the teens Tuesday and Wednesday and lows dropping into the single digits beginning Monday night through early Thursday morning.
