Five Phillies join Phanatic to surprise elementary school students who are "Phanatic about reading"

  • Education

Students at St. Mary Interparochial School in Society Hill knew there was going to be something fun related to the Phillies happening at their school Tuesday morning, they just weren't sure what, exactly.

Imagine their surprise when the Phanatic showed up joined by five players from the Phillies.

Cristopher Sanchez, Weston Wilson, Kody Clemens, Orion Kerkering and Buddy Kennedy helped recognize the students at St. Mary's who were one of the top-performing schools in the Phanatic About Reading program, presented by Xfinity.

The Phillies players and the Phanatic read stories to the kids while acting them out bringing the mascot's book, The Philly Phanatic’s Hero, to life.

The free, incentive-based program encouraged students from Pre-K through 8th grade to read for at least 15 minutes a day helping to boost literacy skills.

With over 164,000 students participating throughout the program in the Philadelphia region, it was a home run for education.

See a photo array below from our very own James Short who was on hand for the festivities:
