South Street’s Sonny’s Cocktail Joint reopens: Elevated dive bar vibes meet modern innovation

From cutting-edge draft cocktails to eclectic decor, Sonny’s is back with something for everyone to love.

  • Things To Do

After nearly three years of rebuilding following a devastating fire, husband-wife team Chris Fetfatzes and Heather Annechiarico are thrilled to announce the grand reopening of Sonny’s Cocktail Joint, located at 1508 South Street. The bar, originally opened in 2022, quickly became a neighborhood favorite for its laid-back atmosphere, expertly crafted cocktails, and unique comfort food. Now, Sonny’s is back, better than ever, and ready to reclaim its spot as South Street’s go-to hangout.

What to expect at Sonny’s

Sonny’s Cocktail Joint combines expertly made drinks, elevated comfort food, and a retro, neighborhood vibe. The bar has been completely renovated with seating for 60 inside and an eclectic outdoor covered patio accommodating 20 more. Private events can host up to 100 guests cocktail-style.

The food

In the kitchen, underground pizza guru and former Hawthornes’ chef Steven Seibel, aka "Uncle Pizza Party," is serving up creative dishes like:

  • Bar Pies: From the Prince of South Street with cup-and-char pepperoni to the sausage and long hot pizza topped with house-made sausage crumble.
  • Snacks and Dips: Standouts include buffalo chicken dip with kettle chips, crab rangoon dip with wonton crisps, fried shrimp tossed in buffalo sauce, and truffle butter popcorn.
  • Classics with a Twist: Try the double smash burger with Cooper Sharp American, the sweet-and-tangy bang bang chicken tenders, or sweet potato fries with chipotle aioli.

The drinks

  • The drink program, led by Beverage Director Scott Rodrigue, offers something for every palate:
  • Draft Cocktails: A cutting-edge draft system with 13 lines for cocktails, including sub-zero freezer cocktails and nitro-infused drinks.
  • Craft Beers & Wines: Eight draft beer taps and four draft wines, plus a curated mix of local and iconic beers like Yuengling, Guinness, and Natty Boh.
  • Cocktail Highlights: Enjoy Japanese highballs, nitro espresso martinis, and freezer kegged cocktails that are rocket-cold. The back bar also features rare and allocated bourbons for enthusiasts.

The vibes

Sonny’s is designed to feel like a retro VFW hall, blending throwback design elements with modern touches. Inside, guests will find checkered floors, vinyl records, vintage beer art, textured glass, and thrifted treasures. The outdoor patio offers a hidden oasis with eclectic seating, rugs, curated plants, and vintage collectibles.

“We wanted to create a space where guests could enjoy a Pacifico or Miller High Life side-by-side with highly technical, thoughtfully crafted cocktails,” said Fetfatzes.

A community comeback

Sonny’s reopening is more than just a return to business—it’s a comeback story. After the fire that also closed Wine Dive, the team worked tirelessly to restore Sonny’s. “We missed everyone. This is such an emotional moment for us, and we can’t wait to bring good times back to South Street,” said Fetfatzes.

Sonny’s is named after Fetfatzes’ mother, Olimpia Fetfatzes, whose memory serves as inspiration for the bar’s welcoming personality. “This is a bar for everyone. Whether you want a domestic brew, natural wine, or a clarified milk punch, your glass is always full at Sonny’s,” he added.

Opening hours and special events

For now, Sonny’s is open Wednesday through Sunday, 5:00 pm to 1:00 am, with the kitchen open until midnight. Hours will expand in the spring. For Eagles fans, Sonny’s will open early this Sunday with game-day specials, including:

  • $5 cocktail shots (Nuclear Daiquiris & Espresso Martinis)
  • $3 house light beer
  • $8 highballs
  • $6 cheesesteak shorties and glizzys

Celebrate the return

Sonny’s Cocktail Joint promises a welcoming, no-pressure atmosphere where guests can enjoy great food, innovative drinks, and nostalgic vibes. Whether you’re stopping in for a quick drink or staying all night, Sonny’s is ready to make your glass—and your evening—feel full.
