Members of the Philadelphia Skating Club and Humane Society were among the 67 passengers killed in the crash between an American Airlines passenger jet and a U.S. Army helicopter in Washington D.C. on Wednesday night.
The historic ice skating club in Ardmore confirmed the news to the Lower-Gwynedd-Ambler-Whitpain Patch on Thursday.
"The Philadelphia Skating Club and Humane Society is devastated to learn of the crash in Washington D.C. that took the lives of several members of the figure skating community, including beloved members of our club," the club said in a statement. "We feel immense grief at the loss of so many talented skaters, their coaches, and families. We share this loss and grief with the entire USFS Community."
None of the deceased were identified by the club.
The crash between American Airlines flight 5382 and A Black Hawk helicopter on a training mission occurred just before 9PM Wednesday,, causing both vessels to plunge into the frigid Potomac River near Ronald Reagan International Airport.
There were 60 passengers and four crew members on the jet and three soldiers on the helicopter. All 67 are believed to have died in the crash.
Among the dead were world champion Russian figure skaters Evgenia Shiskova and Vadim Naumov. Six members of the Skating Club of Boston were also killed in the tragic accident as well as other young skaters returning from the U.S. Figure Skating National Development Camp.
