A Delaware County man was shot and killed in West Philadelphia by two attempted car robbers Sunday, according to a spokesperson for the Philadelphia Police Department
Carmen Suero Jr., 70, of Drexel Hill, was shot around 5:07 p.m. Sunday on the 300 block of North 63rd Street, according to police. They said Suero was there for an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.
Suero left his sedan idling unattended, and two suspects got in and attempted to steal the car. Suero came outside and confronted the carjackers. Police arrived to find Suero suffering from a gunshot wound to his back. They also recovered a 9mm spent casing from the scene.
Suero was taken to Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:24 p.m.
Philadelphia Police announced Monday night that they had arrested Nasir Brogdon and Nysiir Peoples, both 19 years old, in connection to the crime.
The two men are each being charged with murder, conspiracy, robbery, robbery of a motor vehicle, theft, tampering with evidence and receiving stolen property.
Investigators said Brogdon has also been charged with violation of the Uniform Firearms Act and possessing an instrument of crime.
Suero's relatives told 6ABC that while Suero had struggled with addiction for much of his life, the veteran had been sober for two decades. He was dedicated to maintaining his sobriety and helping others maintain theirs.
Relatives said Suero was always at AA meetings, whether attending or chairing them. They told 6ABC that Suero's murder is a tragedy on all fronts.
