The Philadelphia Department of Transportation announced that beginning August 4th, the city will be performing roadway construction on Market Street in Center City.
From August 4th through November 17th, westbound Market Street will be closed all hours between 2nd Street and 6th Street; Eastbound Market Street will remain open. Motorists are advised to use Front Street, Arch Street, and 6th Street.
Minute-by-minute updates can be found on 511 PA for the most up-to-date traffic delay reports. The scheduled project is tentative and up to change based on the weather.
This closure is expected to cause massive traffic congestion and delays; therefore, motorists are advised to allow extra time for their travel.
Concerns with the congestion that the closure will cause in Center City rise as the closure date approaches, as the section of Market Street where the closure will occur provides access to Independence Visitors Center, Center City, and other popular sites in the City.
Philly Daily made multiple attempts to contact the Streets Department in the City of Philadelphia for comment; however, they received no response.
