Pica's Restaurant, the iconic pizza establishment on West Chester Pike in Upper Darby, announced on social media that it is closing it's doors this summer after 70 years.
Known for it's famous upside-down square pizza, Pica's was originally founded in West Philadelphia by Frank Pica Sr., the restaurant has been a gathering place for many for decades.
It gained national notoriety 10 years ago when Jimmy Falllon brought out a Pica's pizza on the Tonight Show when Upper Darby native Tina Fey was a guest.
Now run by a third generation of the family, the business plans to cease operations at its current location where it has been since the 1950s, but indicated that the brand isn't going away altogether.
Pica's has a location in West Chester that will remain open and the post indicated that the plan is to open a smaller location elsewhere in Delaware County, but no further details were provided. No official date was announced for it's closing either, just that it will be sometime this summer.
The response to their post was mostly that of heartbreak from hundreds of individuals who were talking of fond memories of trips to Pica's with family and friends.
Pica's did indicate that any gift cards that patrons have for the restaurant will be honored right up until the last day at the restaurant and that they will also be accepted at the West Chester location.
