A New Jersey couple has been arrested and both are facing charges of kidnapping, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and aggravated assault and criminal restraint.
Brenda Spencer and Branndon Mosley of Gloucester Township have been charged with confining and abusing a child for years before she was able to escape last week.
The victim, who is now 18, told detectives that Spencer and Mosley have been abusing her since 2018.
"What this young woman survived was absolutely horrific," said Grace MacAulay, Camden County Prosecutor.
The victim told police about the deplorable conditions that she was forced to live in. Explaining that at one point, for around a year, she was forced to live in a dog crate and was only occasionally let out.
At other times, she was forced to live in a padlocked bathroom where they kept her chained up, and a bare room that only contained a bucket, which they gave her as a toilet.
The bare room was equipped with an alarm system that would alert Spencer and Mosley if she tried to escape.
She reported that on top of the living conditions, she was sexually abused and beaten with a belt by Mosley.
Last Thursday, the victim finally escaped and received help from a neighbor.
At the time of this writing, the relationship between the couple and the victim is unclear.
