Beginning on Sunday, June 8, southbound Interstate 95 along with the ramp from eastbound I-676 and the inside lane of northbound I-95 between I-676 and the southbound on-ramp from Columbus Boulevard at E. Morris/Water Street will be closed from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the following mornings for construction.
The construction will occur on Sundays through Thursdays.
The work is taking place for the placement of deck beams for concrete coverings included in the I-95 Central Access Philadelphia (CAP) project.
During the hours of the closure, motorists travelling south on I-95 will be directed to use the Girard Avenue Interchange (Exit 23), southbound Delaware Avenue/Columbus Boulevard, and E. Morris Street/Water Street.
Motorists travelling east on I-676 heading towards southbound I-95 will be directed to exit at 8th Street and follow local detours to southbound Columbus Boulevard and E. Morris Street/Water Street to access southbound I-95.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when travelling through the work areas because there is the possibility of significant delays and backups.
The I-95 Central Access Philadelphia project construction began in early 2023, which is projected to take five years to complete.
The CAP project is replacing and expanding the covered area over I-95, which sits between Chestnut Street and Walnut Street. The new project will include a larger cover, which will extend east over Christopher Columbus Boulevard at Penn’s Landing.
In addition, the South Street Pedestrian Bridge over I-95 will be extended. The structure will take on a signature look: “a ‘Tied-Arch’ Bridge,” as quoted from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
The project is a $329 million partnership with PennDOT, the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, and the City of Philadelphia.
Improvement of pedestrian and multi-modal access between Center City and the Delaware River Waterfront is the overall objective of the project.
