With the health insurance marketplace open for enrollment, Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday is urging consumers to be on high alert for scams and fraudulent websites promising health coverage.

The Pennsylvania Attorney General Office’s Health Care Section has warned of a rise in fake websites posing as official online insurance marketplaces.

Officials caution that some sites are fronts for “bad actors” attempting to steal personal information and payments from unsuspecting consumers.

“Scammers today try to attach their scams to trending events and happenings, making them more believable and increasing their chances of success,” Sunday said in a statement. “If you are using the marketplace to shop for a new health insurance plan this year, be sure you are practicing due diligence. Do not let scammers prevent you from accessing necessary medical care.”

The official state Affordable Care Act marketplace is Pennie, which serves about 500,000 Pennsylvania families.

Websites operating outside of Pennie may advertise plans that do not comply with federal requirements for marketplace health insurance, the attorney general’s office noted.

The unofficial plans often impose strict limits on care and leave consumers responsible for large out-of-pocket costs.

The warning also extends to unsolicited contact during the open enrollment season, the attorney general’s office said.

Consumers should be wary of any calls or emails claiming to have limited-time offers or promising lower monthly costs through their enrollment process. Officials advise consumers never to provide personal information to unknown callers or through email.

Consumers with questions about Pennsylvania’s marketplace application or enrollment process should contact Pennie directly at 1-844-844-8040 or visit Pennie.com. Pennie can also connect applicants with a certified assistant for in-person support.

Pennsylvanians who suspect they have been the victim of a health insurance scam are encouraged to contact the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General’s Health Care Section at 1-877-888-4877 or by filing a complaint online.
