Next month the magic of the holidays comes alive as Philadelphia Ballet presents George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker at the Academy of Music.
The performances will run from December 5th through to December 31, 2025.
“A beloved holiday tradition for generations, this spectacular production invites audiences to rediscover the wonder of the season through breathtaking choreography, Tchaikovsky’s unforgettable score and dazzling stagecraft that has captivated Philadelphians for more than six decades,” Philadelphia Ballet said.
“An extraordinary feat of artistry and collaboration, The Nutcracker utilizes the full force of Philadelphia Ballet Company - all 50 dancers, 45 musicians, 50 stagehands, and more than 140 students from School of Philadelphia Ballet, School of Philadelphia New Jersey and Metropolitan Ballet Academy, performing in three alternating casts - to bring Balanchine’s timeless vision to life.
“Each performance is a spectacular union of precision and imagination, offering audiences of all ages a moment of pure enchantment.”
Set to Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, performed live by Philadelphia Ballet Orchestra under the direction of Beatrice Jona Affron, this timeless tale follows young Marie and her Nutcracker Prince on a journey through swirling snowflakes, shimmering confections and the dazzling Land of Sweets. From the grand spectacle of the growing Christmas tree to the delicate Waltz of the Snowflakes, The Nutcracker continues to be a touchstone of Philadelphia’s holiday season.
“This production captures everything that makes ballet - and the holidays - so special,” said Angel Corella, The Ruth & A. Morris Williams, Jr. Artistic Director. “Each year, we approach The Nutcracker with renewed energy and inspiration. It’s one of the most complex productions in our repertoire and seeing every element from the orchestra to the children’s cast come together so seamlessly is a reminder of how powerful and joyful live performance can be.”
Shelly Power, The Carolyn Newson, Ph.D., Endowed Chief Executive Officer of Philadelphia Ballet, added, “For many families, The Nutcracker is more than a performance, it’s a cherished holiday tradition that brings generations together. Whether it’s your first time or your fiftieth, this production never loses its sense of wonder. It’s a perfect way to celebrate the joy, imagination and togetherness of the season.”
