The Philadelphia Police Department announced that starting on October 1, 2025, members of the PPD will begin wearing the Department’s newly designed midnight-blue uniform shirts.
“Residents can expect to see these new shirts gradually appearing across neighborhoods as the rollout continues,” the Philadelphia Police Department stated. “This update marks the next step in the Department’s historic transition to a uniform program that reflects both our proud history and our modern mission. The new midnight blue shirts reconnect us to the traditional look of the Philadelphia Police Department — worn for more than a century before powder blue
was introduced in the 1970s — while aligning with the Department’s new midnight blue load-bearing ballistic vests.”
The Philadelphia Police Department stated the new design reinforces professionalism, authority, and familiarity; qualities that the public expects from
its officers. The transition to the new uniform will continue in phases as officers are issued their new shirts. Until then, members who have not yet received them will continue to wear the powder blue shirts currently in use.
