A local Philadelphia woman, Kayla Amoroso, is walking to end the rare, incurable disease her family lives with every day. On October 26th, Kayla will lead the CMTA Philadelphia Walk 4 CMT in Swathmore, and she invites all of Philadelphia to join her.
CMT — Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease — is an inheritable, progressive neuromuscular disease that affects about one-in-2,500 people worldwide. That’s 135,000 people in the US, including an estimated 2,500 people in the Philadelphia metro region, and 5,200 people across the state of Pennsylvania.
CMT causes muscle weakness, impaired balance, difficulty walking, and nerve degeneration. Many people go years before receiving an accurate diagnosis or proper medical care.
The walk itself is a half-mile loop, but participants are welcome to walk any distance they are comfortable with. It is open to walkers of all ages and abilities and begins at 990 Fairview Road in Swarthmore (Nelson Hall).
Proceeds benefit the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (CMTA) and its ongoing research to develop treatments and improve the quality of life for Kayla’s family and others living with this debilitating disease. The Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (CMTA) is a community-led, community-driven 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and the leading global philanthropic funder of CMT research, according to their website.
