MILWAUKEE — Ranger Suárez, David Robertson, Matt Strahm and Jhoan Duran combined to pitch nine scoreless innings Wednesday afternoon, as the Phillies defeated the NL-best Brewers to earn a series victory.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Phillies had a chance to really do damage off of Freddy Peralta when Bryce Harper walked and then J.T. Realmuto reached on an infield single. But Brandon Marsh then struck out after failing to get a bunt down early in his at-bat, which Harrison Bader followed up with a swinging strikeout of his own. Max Kepler — in the lineup over Nick Castellanos — drew a walk to load the bases, but Alec Bohm then struck out to leave the bases loaded.
The Phillies did run the pinch count of Peralta up enough to knock him out after five innings. However, while the two-time All-Star handed out three walks, he allowed just two hits and struck out eight over five frames.
The Brewers looked poised to break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning when Andrew Vaughn followed up a William Contreras leadoff walk by doubling into the left-center field gap.
Suárez, though, managed to escape the jam unscathed. Caleb Durbin grounded out to second base for the first out, before Danny Jansen flew out to center. Contreras didn't test Harrison Bader's arm in center field, a wise decision considering a strong throw was made home. Finally, Andrew Monasterio grounded out to Bohm to end the frame.
That closed the line on Suárez, who limited the Brewers to six hits and zero runs over six shutout innings, while striking out four and walking two. 60 of his 89 pitches were thrown for strikes. Suárez has a 2.89 ERA over 22 starts in his contract year.
Meanwhile, the Phillies finally got the scoring started in the top of the seventh inning against Tobias Myers. Bohm recorded a rare triple with one out in the frame thanks to an ill-advised diving attempt in right field by Isaac Collins. Two batters later, Turner plated Bohm with a two-out single, giving the Phillies a 1-0 lead:

Strahm ran into a bit of trouble in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs. After an Vaughn single, Jake Bauers pinch ran. J.T. Realmuto attempted to throw Bauers out stealing second, but instead the ball sailed into the outfield, allowing him to advance to third base. Strahm, though, got Durbin to fly out to center field to end the inning.
Bryson Stott drove in Bader in the top of the ninth inning to add an insurance run:

Duran recorded his 10th save as a Phillie in the home half of the ninth, with Bader making a tremendous one-out catch to potentially rob Monasterio of a home run:

The Phillies, now 81-59, will head to Miami for a weekend series against the Marlins, with Cristopher Sánchez slated to take the ball Friday.
