Gov. Shapiro spokesperson calls former VP Harris’ claims ‘simply ridiculous’

Former Vice President Kamala Harris is releasing a new book about her 107-day presidential campaign, which includes new details on her interactions with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who was a finalist to be her running mate.

In an excerpt of the memoir, “107 Days,” which was published Thursday in the New York Times, Harris writes that she felt Shapiro was more interested in “defining” the vice president’s role than helping her win.

She also recalls a meeting in which Shapiro, a Democrat, asked an aide about artwork he could use for the official vice president’s residence.

A spokesperson for Shapiro, Manuel Bonder, responded to the account to Axios reporter Alex Thompson, “It’s simply ridiculous to suggest that Governor Shapiro was focused on anything other than defeating Donald Trump and protecting Pennsylvania from the chaos we are living through now.”

The statement added that “the Governor campaigned tirelessly for the Harris-Walz ticket.”

Shapiro has known Harris for years and was a finalist for the vice presidential spot before she chose Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Last year, some conservative commentators suggested Shapiro was not chosen by Harris because of his Jewish faith, but the book “How Trump Retook the White House and the Democrats Lost America” stated that was not a factor for Harris, whose husband is also Jewish.

The book also provides accounts of Harris’ interactions with former President Joe Biden, who abruptly dropped out of the race in July 2024, as well as other Democratic leaders, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom and former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.

During an appearance on sports analyst Stephen A. Smith’s new Sirius XM show, Shapiro was asked about the book and said he had not yet read it.

During the interview, Shapiro said Harris would have to answer questions about whether Biden was fit to run for a second term.

“If you can’t win Pennsylvania, it’s pretty darn hard to win the national election,” Shapiro said, according to an NBC News account of the interview. “And I was very vocal with him, privately, and extremely vocal with his staff about my concerns about his fitness to be able to run for another term. I was direct with them. I told them my concerns.”

Harris lost Pennsylvania by just over 120,000 votes in the 2024 election.

Shapiro is widely considered a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election. He will first run for a second term as governor next year.
