Bykofsky: Slavery is white-washed on Independence Mall

  • Opinion

The Trump Administration has completed another whitewash, with the Thursday removal of any mention of slavery from the President’s House Site on Independence Mall.

If you listen closely, you can hear that President, George Washington, say, “Why, this is the kind of broken crockery we expect from a king!”

OK, maybe it’s just me hearing it, or can you hear it, too?

The current President, Donald John Trump, labors under the belief that unsavory parts of American history “disparage” America, rather than help explain what created us.

The city is suing the feds to have the exhibits returned.

I recently visited the site and found the issue of slaves and slavery handled with fact, authenticity, and a lack of moral finger-pointing.

Slavery was America’s original sin, it is said, and I agree — to a point.

“Americans” didn’t bring slavery here, the British did.

At the founding of our nation, in the Continental Congress, a number of states, and probably a majority of Americans, wanted to end it, but some Southern states threatened to bolt from the 13 colonies, which were pretty fractuous, anyway.

So slavery found a home in the newborn nation, in half of it, anyway.

It took the United States 87 years, and a gruesome civil war, to outlaw slavery.

The truth may hurt, but it is the truth.

Most Americans can stand hearing the truth.

Most of us are not as thin-skinned, and ignorant, as our leader.
