David Robertson — one of a trio of players in franchise history to have three separate stints with the Phillies — has announced his retirement.

He did so in a social media message Friday afternoon:

"To all the incredible organizations, teammates, coaches, staff members and fans who have been part of my baseball journey:

"I've decided it's time for me to hang up my spikes and retire from the game I've loved for as long as I can remember. Baseball has given me more than I ever dreamed possible over the last 19 seasons. From winning a World Series, to pitching in an All-Star Game, to representing the United States and bringing home a World Baseball Classic gold and Olympic silver. I've had the privilege of playing alongside amazing teammates, learning from outstanding coaches, and being welcomed into organizations that felt like family. To the trainers, clubhouse staff, front offices and everyone behind the scenes, thank you for all that you do. And to the fans who supported me, thank you, your passion fueled me every single day.

"Most importantly, thank you to my wife and children. Your love, sacrifice, patience and dedication made this career possible. As I step away from the game, I'm excited to be home with my family, to focus on our farms and to continue growing High Socks for Hope. Helping families rebuild after disaster has been one of the most rewarding parts of my life outside baseball.

"Saying goodbye isn't easy, but I do so with deep gratitude for every opportunity, challenge and memory. I'll forever be thankful for the game and for everyone who made this journey extraordinary."

Robertson made just 49 of his 881 career regular-season appearances with the Phillies, yet he's forever a part of franchise history.

He closed out Game 1 of the 2022 World Series as the Phillies defeated the Houston Astros. He was charged with two runs in a Game 1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2025 NLDS. And as noted above, he's one of just three players in franchise history to suit up for the Phillies across three separate stints, with the other two being Chuck Klein and Bill Hallman.

Robertson also faced off against the Phillies in some big moments. He was part of the 2009 New York Yankees team that defeated the Phillies in the World Series, preventing a repeat. He was on the 2023 Miami Marlins squad that the Phillies made quick work of in the NLWCS.

It's mildly surprising that Robertson is walking away from the game because he told OnPattison's Anthony SanFilippo in August that he thought he could pitch for "a couple more years, at least." Ultimately, though, he's going to turn 41 in April, so after some time to reflect, he seemingly just decided that it was time.

Robertson finishes his 17-year career with a 2.93 ERA, 2.98 FIP and 179 saves. According to Baseball Reference, his 21.9 WAR is 41st among all relievers in MLB history.
