In recognition of National Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM) this March, the Pennsylvania Lottery is highlighting the wide range of free resources available to help players maintain Healthy Play® habits. The Lottery is partnering with state and national organizations to raise awareness of gambling-related harms and promote safe, informed play across the Commonwealth. The national campaign, now in its 23rd year, is being recognized on social media using the hashtag #PGAM2026.

“Problem Gambling Awareness Month reminds us that Lottery games should be enjoyed responsibly and within your means. We’re very proud of the fact that the Pennsylvania Lottery has been a longtime supporter of this initiative,” said Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director Drew Svitko. “We encourage players to explore our educational resources, take advantage of online tools, set limits, and reach out to support services, including the Pennsylvania Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-GAMBLER, when needed.”

Throughout the year, the Pennsylvania Lottery partners with non-profit organizations like the Council on Compulsive Gambling of Pennsylvania, Inc. (CCGP), where players and their families can access educational materials, counseling, and other support services. CCGP offers guidance on recognizing early warning signs, joining self-help meetings, and learning practical tips for safer gambling. These resources help players make informed choices and maintain control over their play habits.

“When problems with gambling impact a person’s life, it’s often referred to as a ‘hidden addiction,’ as it can be more challenging to recognize than other addictions", said CCGP Executive Director Josh Ercole. "During PGAM, we aim to raise awareness of problem gambling, but also of the many tools and resources available to help address the problem. For years, through our work with the Pennsylvania Lottery, we shine a light on these resources and connect people with help in Pennsylvania.”

The Lottery also features information about responsible play for players who enjoy traditional games, like Scratch-Offs, and for those who like to play online. One example includes the Pennsylvania Lottery providing several online tools to help players manage their play. These tools include:

  • Setting spending limits
  • Cool-off periods, and self-exclusion options for six months, one year, or five years
  • A brief self-assessment survey to evaluate their habits and make adjustments if necessary

The Lottery also helps fund the Pennsylvania Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-GAMBLER (1-800-426-2537), which connects callers with trained specialists who can offer advice, treatment referrals, and guidance for individuals and families affected by gambling-related harms.

Healthy Play® is about staying aware, understanding your limits, and keeping gaming safe and enjoyable for everyone. Healthy Play® guidelines encourage players to:

  • Play within a personal budget and stay within financial limits
  • Understand the chances of winning and avoid chasing losses
  • Keep gaming from interfering with family, work, or personal responsibilities
  • Take breaks or stop playing if it is no longer enjoyable
  • Ensure children do not have access to Lottery games

Problem Gambling Awareness Month Events

David Yeager, a Pennsylvania veteran, and advocate in long-term recovery from problem gambling, shared his personal experience at last year’s PGAM press conference. He spoke about the severe financial and emotional toll of gambling addiction and his mission to educate fellow veterans and military service members about the risks.

“While not all of us are impacted by problem gambling, those of us who are often don’t realize it’s a treatable addiction until severe damage is done,” said Yeager. “Much more education and awareness are needed to help those struggling realize there’s help available.”

Continuing its awareness, the Lottery will partner with the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP), the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB), and the CCGP to host a Problem Gambling Awareness Month informational table at the Pennsylvania State Capitol on March 25. The public is encouraged to stop by and get their questions answered. The event will also highlight available resources, provide educational materials, and offer guidance to help players and families access support.
