An historical marker on the move

  • Culture

Chubb Limited in Philadelphia is on the move. So is the historical marker out front of its historic Philadelphia Headquarters. Last week, Chubb announced that it had sold its historical building at 436 Walnut Street to a New York Firm and is now moving to a 331,000 square foot, $30 Million facility at 2000 Arch Street. Now, the historical marker that has graced the sidewalk outside of the building is going with it as well.

Although the Insurance Company of North America did not become a corporation until 1794, they were working in Philadelphia in maritime insurance since 1792. It’s actually the oldest capital stock insurance company and the first marine one in all of America. The company was global in the 19th century, and one hundred and fifty-six years later created America’s First Home Owner’s Policy in 1950. The current Chubb building at 436 Walnut Street was built on the North Side in 1924 and the South Building in 1974.

Chubb Limited acquired the company in 1999. Even today, Insurance Company of North America’s Fire marks dating from 1796 to 1830 can still be seen on some of Philadelphia’s historic buildings to this day.
